Building Connections and Intimacy

In an episode of New Girl, Jessica Day (played by Zooey Deschanel) has lost her job as a teacher.  Dejected and confused, Jessica is feeling vulnerable. When a gorgeous guy named Sam approaches her in a bar and asks, “Excuse me, are you Katie?” she impulsively decides that she will pretend to be this Katie, whom Sam has only met online. When Sam makes his intentions known—he is only in it for the casual sex - Jessica doesn’t bombard him with questions like: “Have you been tested for STIs?” or “How many people have you slept with?” Instead, hoping to avoid awkward questions, she assumes she can trust him. As the story continues, Sam eventually finds out that Jessica is not Katie but decides he’d like to continue their “arrangement.” Jessica, however, is beginning to have feelings for Sam. She determines that things either have to get more serious, or should end.
